Like all single men, I've committed some royal screw-ups when it comes to women. But as a male columnist*, I've also made some observations about different types of daters that deserve to be passed along. Consider this your road map for where you DON'T want to go in your love life.

#1. Rebound Guy
Knowing how bummed I've been since my ex, Claudia, left for Europe, my buddy tried to set me up with his "fine coworker." Very kind of him, but I declined. With my heart stuck in international customs, there's no way I could make a connection. Not that I wasn't tempted. We men secretly hope we'll never have to deal with our feelings and instead can "fix" our sadness with a new woman. Problem is, we're always comparing her to the ex

#2. Disappearing Guy

Some seemingly normal guys have a bad habit of vanishing. Excuses like "work's really busy" may be true, but there's often something else going on. My old roommate tried to woo his new girlfriend while still dating his old one. I also know someone who told a woman he was single in New York, although he was married in Ohio. Both guys checked out for days at a time.

When you're just starting to date, it's not like you're tracking a person's every movement. Still, the giveaway is erratic contact. Is he in touch every day and then suddenly MIA? Does he often cancel plans? Or does he suddenly want to meet up in an hour, after not calling all week? Beware.

#3. Slick Guy

With his sporty car, high-tech cell phone, and Swedish designer toothbrush, my college roommate managed to hide his insecurity behind hip stuff. He never let women get close for fear they'd find him out. So women wound up feeling rejected when HE was the one who sucked.

My advice: If his life looks like a magazine spread, steer clear. Say what you will about the guy who has a painting of poker-playing dogs or a mountain of laundry, but I promise you this: He's real.

#4. Rude Guy

I'm amazed at what men get away with. A partial list of nasty moves I've witnessed: checking out the waitress, fiddling with a BlackBerry during dinner, asking the cute bartender for her number when his date is in the bathroom. If a man lets the door slam shut instead of opening it for you, make that all the closure you need.

#5. Grabby Guy

Hands on thighs, stroking things that didn't ask to be stroked, sensual innuendos when you barely know each other -- he may try to explain these things with an "Oh, I'm so attracted to you I can't help it" line. But no matter how attractive you are, he CAN help it. And if you're not getting the respect you want early on, he probably won't surprise you with it later.

#6. Last Year's Guy

Long nights and a fear of being single forever can make going back to an ex seem mighty attractive. I've been guilty of it twice, both during lonely times in the dead of winter. Recycling romance seemed far easier than the unknown, and it was... for the two months before we rediscovered exactly why we broke up in the first place. What's the lesson here? Move forward, not back. And know that it's better to be out there looking than stuck on a couch with some guy you're just going to wind up dumping anyway. He might be happy, but you deserve more.

A cinematic love letter to Stern's real-life wife, Private Parts offered the burgeoning actress a complex emotional role that proved without a doubt what she was fully capable of. Follow-up roles in such high-profile fare as Deep Impact (1998) and Mystery, Alaska (1999) didn't quite offer McCormack the chance to shine that Private Parts did, though it was obvious to all who viewed her subsequent roles that her star was on the rise. The millennial turnover found McCormack successfully alternating between drama (Madison) and comedy (High Heels and Low Lifes) before once again heading the Hollywood route with a supporting performance in K-PAX. In the newest issue of Us Weekly, Lindsay Lohan opens up about her heartbreaking split from Samantha Ronson , the "humiliating" weekend showdown with Ronson's family, and says that friends' fears she is suicidal are unfounded.

"It's absolute hell," Lohan told Us on Monday in a far-ranging interview over several lengthy phone calls and emails where she was agitated, crying and baffled by the turn of events.

Ronson broke it off with her girlfriend of nearly two years last Friday, and hired five security guards to keep Lohan out of an afterparty for her sister Charlotte at the Chateau Marmont. (Lohan was staying directly one floor above the Ronsons with her mom Dina and sister Ali.)

The next day, Ronson changed the locks on the Hollywood Hills home she shared with Lohan. On Monday, Ronson's mom and sister asked police about obtaining a restraining order against Lohan, Beverly Hills Sgt. Nutall confirms to Us.

Record Label Dumps, Removes Any Trace of Jessica Simpson

Back in December, Joe Galante, the head of Sony BMG Nashville, was furious with the antics of Jessica Simpson and threatening to drop her from the label.

Could these rumors be coming to fruition after her shaky tour with Rascal Flatts, during which she routinely forgot song lyrics and was letting herself go?

Looks that way, as Jessica is nowhere to be found on her label's websites.

As of right now, the alleged country singer's name appears nowhere among the artists listed on the sites of either Columbia Nashville or Sony Music Nashville.

Moreover, a search finds that any prior mention of Jessica Simpson pictures, profile, press releases - has been purged. Black ops. As if she never existed.

One can still find old press releases about the giant-breasted, lip-injection loving celebrity in cached pages on Google, but they do not exist anywhere on Columbia Nashville or Sony BMG Nashville’s websites at present.

Jessica's rep says she "is and has always been an Epic artist. She was on loan to Sony Nashville for her country album, but continues to be on Epic's label."

Wonder how long that will be the case.

We would bad for Jessica, but Joe Simpson has made millions whoring her out to anyone that could pay, so how much sympathy can you really have. And occasionally remembering the lyrics isn't that much for paying customers to ask.

Report: Britney Spears Trying to Torpedo Conservatorship

It’s not exactly breaking news that Britney Spears finds her father Jamie Spears' conservatorship of practically everything in her life a little difficult at times.

In fact, rumors swirled last week that Britney teamed up with Sam Lutfi and Adnan Ghalib to torpedo the conservatorship - even calling a lawyer to do so.

A voicemail left for an attorney and the sworn testimony of Lutfi's sister, Christina, corroborate this, although Jamie remains firmly in control for now.

Today, though, the UK’s Star magazine claims their relationship has gotten so bad, she’s trying to end her Circus tour early and has forced him to take a vacation.

He's considering obliging, too, according to this account: “He’ll give Britney her space for a few weeks, if everything goes smoothly,” the magazine reports.

PROTECTOR-IN-CHIEF: No word on how Jamie feels about Chase Benz.

Claims that Britney has been speaking to lawyers to end Jamie's control have taken a toll on her well-being, people close to her say, and the impact is measurable:

After leaving Panama she spent six years in London and after this period she journeyed to her mother's native Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But her stay in Brazil did not last too long and when she was ten years old, she left Brazil and shifted to Manhattan, New York, where she would live for the next fifteen years.

Brewster studied at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York and graduated from the Professional Children’s School in New York. She then enrolled at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, graduating in 2004. Her paternal grandfather Kingman Brewster, Jr. was president of Yale from 1963-1977.

During Jordana's time in Brazil, she got a small part as one of many children who danced on the popular kids show, "Xuxa against Evil." It didn't take Jordana long to realize that she wanted to be an actor. When she moved to New York in the United States of America, she attended a school for girls where she appeared in numerous theatrical performances, one of which was Godspell, where she played the part of Jesus Christ.

She wanted to pursue her career in acting and for this she joined the Professional School for Children. While schooling. It was during this time Brewster made her debut on the daytime soap opera, All My Children, in a one-time appearance playing Anita Santos. Later Jordana made her most famous movie appearance as Mia Toretto in the movie The Fast and the Furious (2001). She played criminal mastermind Lucy Diamond in Angela Robinson's 2005 film, D.E.B.S. Her most current role is "Chrissie" in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, which was released on October 6, 2006. She was recently cast in the upcoming show known as "Mr. and Mrs. Smith". The show will pickup 6 months after the events of the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith with her playing the role formerly donned by Angelina Jolie.

Jordana is a very lively person in her real life and she loves to accept challenges and do great things. From 200 to 2001 she dated Mark Wahlberg and has also recently dated Derek Jeter and Jay Penske. In 2002 Stuff magazine named her the 96th hottest woman in their “102 Sexiest Women in the World”. Country's biggest stars are heading to Sin City for the 44th annual Academy of Country Music Awards, which will be broadcast live from the MGM Grand Sunday on CBS at 8 p.m. ET.

Carrie Underwood is up for the night's top honors, entertainer of the year (a fan-voted category this year), against four of country music's biggest cowboys – Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban and George Strait.

Those on tap to perform include Taylor Swift, Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts and Sugarland.

Fresh from her Hannah Montana movie premiere, Miley Cyrus will take the ACM stage to perform "The Climb," a tune from the film.

Kutcher, who married Moore in 2005, recently posted a picture (shown above) on Twitter, of her, bending over in a white bikini, writing, "watching my wife steam my suit while wearing a bikini. I love God!" Adding, "Shhh! Don't tell wifey" and his stepdaughters were none too happy.

A source said, "Seeing their mom and stepdad act like teenagers makes the girls cringe! They think their online exchanges are embarrassing and uncool.

"The girls freaked out when they saw Demi's butt in the air. They sat Demi and Ashton down and told them they needed to curb their immature behavior.

"Demi said it was just innocent fun, but Rumer shook her head in frustration and said, 'Grow up, Mom!'"

Rumer admits her mother and stepfather's Twitter use is "mind-blowing." She said, "They do it all the time and it kind of blows my mind."

And, being a mother of four (two who are now grown) myself, I'm betting Rumer's "mind-blowing" comment is not a compliment to her mom and stepdad.

Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady, who secretly married in February, exchanged vows a second time in a short sunset ceremony at her home in Costa Rica Saturday.

The bride, in a long designer dress and a veil that trailed 10 feet, held a bouquet of white orchids, “looked so gorgeous,” a source says. “She looked beautiful.”

Security guards blocked off key access points to Bundchen's house in Santa Teresa, where 25 or so guests gathered under a tent set up on the home’s balcony.

After the ceremony, the handsome Tom Brady, in a gray suit and vest with white pants, held his one-year-old son John (whose mom is Bridget Moynahan) on the balcony and spoke with guests like Bob Kraft, the New England Patriots owner.

That afternoon, Gisele got dressed at the nearby Hotel Flor Blanca while workers readied her home. Around 4:30 p.m., the Brazilian supermodel and other guests raced back to her home just in time for the sunset nuptials.

Earlier that day, Tom Brady hosted a bachelor’s brunch for the men in his entourage at the luxurious Milarepa hotel, while his beautiful wife entertained the female guests and went over some of last-minute wedding details at her home.

The fun, separate his-and-her gatherings was the final lead up to three days of pre-wedding celebration before the couple's second set of nuptials.

Does Sex and the City Sequel Have "Big" Problems?

The second Sex and the City movie may not be as big as the first.

We're sure the box office will be just as major, but I'm told there's been a delay in getting Mr. Big to agree to return.

While no start date to shoot the movie has been decided, one source tells me that Chris Noth has yet to sign on because of "scheduling problems."

Timing may not be the issue. Quite simply, Noth and New Line Cinema are still in talks.

As I first reported in February, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall and Kristin Davis are set to reprise their roles, along with writer-director Michael Patrick King.

New Line announced earlier this week that SATC II will hit theaters May 28, 2010.

But there's going to be some inventive storytelling happening if Mr. Big isn't around for the sophomore effort. The last we saw, Carrie married Mr. Big even after he first left her at the altar.

Altantuyaa was born in 1978. Her parents raised her and her sister while they worked in Russia where Altantuyaa started first grade elementary school. She was reportedly fluent in Mongolian, Russian, Chinese and English..

Altantuyaa moved back to Mongolia in 1990 and a few years later, married a Mongolian techno singer, Maadai. They had a child in 1996 but the marriage ended in divorce and the child went to live with Altantuyaa's parents.

Despite training as a teacher, Altantuyaa briefly moved to France where she attended modeling school before returning to Mongolia.

She was allegedly introduced to Abdul Razak Baginda, a defense analyst from the Malaysian Strategic Research Centre think-tank, at an international diamond convention in Hong Kong by Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak, and had a relationship with him. She reportedly had worked as Abdul Razak’s translator on a deal he was brokering for the Malaysian government to buy submarines from France. The pair seem to have

travelled to Paris together for the submarine deal. The two quickly became romantically involved. Altantuya, nicknamed Tuya by her friends, proved to be a useful assistant, helping Baginda translate from Russian to English. Amy, Altantuya’s best friend said that at the end of March 2005 the couple was in Paris, where they met with Najib Razak. She mentioned that a picture was taken which showed the three in a Parisian private club. “Tuya showed me the pix. Police investigation of her remains revealed that she was shot twice before C-4 explosives were used on her remains, although there has been later suggestion that the C-4 explosives may have killed her. When her remains were found their identity could only be confirmed with DNA testing. The provenance of the C-4 remains unclear.

Abdul Razak and three members of the police force were arrested during the murder investigation. The two murder suspects have been named as Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri, 30 and Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar, 35. They had been members of the elite Unit Tindakan Khas (the Malaysian Police Special Action Force or counter-terrorism unit) and were both assigned to the office of the Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, who was also the Defence Minister at the time of the murder. Abdul Razak has been charged with abetment in the murder.

Murder trial

The trial was originally going to be held in March 2007, but was postponed until the 4 June 2007. Due to controversial and last-minute changes in the prosecution and defence teams, and the presiding judge, the trial was again postponed until 18 June 2007. The pre-trial preparations have seen both the prosecution and defence teams level accusations of evidential impropriety at one another. During the trial there was an incident between Baginda's wife and the victim's father.

According to testimony in the trial of Altantuya's accused murderer Abdul Razak Baginda, the murdered woman accompanied him to Paris at a time when Malaysia's defense ministry, headed by Najib Tun Razak, was negotiating through a Malaysian company, Perimekar Sdn Bhd, to buy two Scorpene submarines and a used Agosta submarine produced by the French government under a French-Spanish joint venture, Armaris. Perimekar at the time was owned by a company called Ombak Laut, which was wholly owned by Abdul Razak.

On 22 July 2008 lawyer Karpal Singh filed a notice of motion to call Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and three others to testify in the trial for the murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu. Karpal who holds a watching brief for Altantuya's family, also sought to recall private detective P. Balasubramaniam who was the first prosecution witness in the trial. Karpal said that summoning Najib is bound to admit fresh evidence to the case. The application was filed under Section 425 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) which allows a court to summon or recall any person as a witness in a trial. It also allows the court to summon or recall any such person if his evidence appears to the court to be essential to the just decision of the case. On 23 July 2008 the High Court rejected a petition by lawyer Karpal Singh to obtain testimony from Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak, dealing a blow to the opposition's efforts to link Najib to the 2006 killing of translator Altantuya Shaariibuu. In rejecting the application, High Court judge Mohd Zaki said Karpal, who is holding a watching brief for victim Altantuya's family, has no locus standi or is in no position to make the application. He mentioned only the parties involved, namely the prosecution and the defence, have the right to do so. numerous other evidence has been presented during the trial, raising suspicions that the proceedings are being drawn out to prepare for either acquittals or diminished sentences for the three, perhaps to keep them from pointing the finger at Najib.

On 31 October 2008 the High Court acquitted Abdul Razak Baginda of abetment in the murder of Altantuya. Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri and Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar have been ordered to enter their defence and testify under oath. On 10 November 2008 it was announced that the murder trial has been postponed to January 2009 in order to allow the defence more time to prepare and gather witnesses. Among the witnesses that a defence lawyer is seeking is Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Kamarudin and “missing” private investigator P. Balasubramaniam, whose whereabouts is still not known.

From the onset of the trial the defence counsel for Sirul Azhar and Azilah had sought to get the 112 statements from all prosecution witnesses and this was rejected on the grounds that witness statements recorded under Section 112 of the Criminal Procedure Code is privileged. The judge has denied them access to the witness statement of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's former aide-de-camp DSP Musa Safri to testify in order to rebut Abdul Razak's affidavit.

Statements by the Accused

On 3 February, 2009 Sirul Azhar asked the court not to sentence him to death for Altantuya's murder, saying he was like "a black sheep that has to be sacrificed" to protect unnamed people who have never been brought to court or faced questioning. "I have no reason to cause hurt, what's more to take the life of the victim in such a cruel manner," Sirul said. "I appeal to the court, which has the powers to determine if I live or die, not to sentence me so as to fulfil others' plans for me." He stated in his confession which was tape-recorded and conducted in Bahasa Malaysia, that he was told he was not to answer questions but that whether in answer to questions or not, his remarks would be recorded as a statement.

New Evidence

First Statutory Declaration

In a statutory declaration in his sedition trial in June 2008, Raja Petra accused Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor (the wife of Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) of being one of three individuals who were present at the crime scene when Altantuya Shaariibuu was murdered on 19 October 2006. He wrote that Najib’s wife, Rosmah Mansor, and Acting Colonel Aziz Buyong and his wife, Norhayati, Rosmah’s aide-de-camp, were present at the scene of the murder and that Aziz Buyong was the individual who placed C4 plastic explosive on Altantuya’s body and blew it up.

Dr Shaariibuu Setev, the father of murdered Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu, has asked the police to conduct a thorough investigation into an allegation by Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Kamaruddin. He said the police should look seriously into the allegation by Raja Petra as it might provide them with fresh evidence. In retaliation, the two people named in Raja Petra Kamarudin’s statutory declaration on 18 June 2008, Lt-Col Aziz Buyong and his wife Lt-Col Norhayati Hassan, as having been present at the murder scene of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu are suing the Malaysia Today editor for defamation. Aziz is seeking an apology from Raja Petra to be published in certain websites and newspapers, the removal of the statutory declaration from his blog and damages of RM1 million.

Second Statutory Declaration

A second statutory declaration was filed on 1 July 2008 by Abdul Razak Baginda's private investigator P. Balasubramaniam, disclosing Najib's links to the murdered Mongolian girl. He said the police omitted information about the relationship between Najib and Mongolian murder victim Altantuya Shaariibuu in his statement. In the declaration Abdul Razak had told Balasubramaniam that the deputy prime minister had a sexual relationship with Altantuya and that the trio had dined together in Paris. Balasubramaniam detailed conversations in a statutory declaration in which the well-connected political analyst allegedly told him he had in effect inherited Altantuya as a lover from Najib, who passed her on because he didn’t want to be harassed as deputy prime minister. Among other lurid details, Balasubramaniam described text messages between Najib and Abdul Razak in which the latter was asking for help to avoid arrest. Former deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for a Royal Commission of Inquiry to look into the case.

P. Balasubramaniam made a retraction of the statutory declaration he made on 1 July 2008 and its replacement with one that erased all traces of allegations with references to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Altantuya Shaariibuu's murder. There were accusations that this new statutory declaration could have been due to intimidation or inducement, and was done not on his own free will. Bala's first lawyer Americk Singh Sidhu said he was not able to get in touch with Bala despite repeated phone calls. The Malaysian police said on Sunday 6 July that they have asked Interpol to help find the private investigator who has been reported. missing since making explosive claims linking the deputy premier to a murder. Bala's nephew has filed a missing person's report, saying the investigator and his family had disappeared. It was discovered on July 10 that Balasubramaniam's house in Taman Pelangi here has been broken into but police have yet to ascertain whether anything was stolen. Balasubramaniam is said to have taken refuge in a neighbouring country with his wife and children.

Alleged Interference by Najib

Even behind bars under ISA detention, Raja Petra's website Malaysia Today carried a report detailing allegations on an exchange of text messages between Najib and Shafee Abdullah, the prominent lawyer who represented Abdul Razak Baginda before he was charged with abetting two police officers in the murder of the Altantunya. The SMSes, which went on from 8 November to 2 December 2006, raise some questions over the handling of the murder case and suggests that Najib took a strong interest in the investigation from the beginning.

Alleged Destruction of Evidence

After the murder of Altantuya, Datuk Syed Abdul Rahman Alhabshi the honorary consul of Mongolia in Malaysia contacted Shaaribuu Setev, her father. When Datuk Said asked Shaaribuu for all documents, especially pictures, notebooks, films, computer files that could help with the murder investigation, Shaaribuu did not hesitate. He gave Alhabshi everything he had found in his daughter appartment in Ulan Bator. Alhabshi kept the documents for himself, not giving them to the court in Malaysia. “We thought he was working for us, but actually he is working for the malaysian side”, says Shaaribuu with bitterness. Altantuya’s father then asked the Mongolian foreign ministry to dismiss Datuk Said from his position as an honorary consul. The ministry then summoned the diplomat in Ulan Bator to ask him to explain his behaviour. To justify his attitude, Datuk Said has said to Shaaribuu “Given my high position within Umno, it is not possible for me to oppose Najib Razak”.

Katherine Heigl: "I'm There" if Grey's Anatomy Wants Me

Despite ongoing reports that she wanted out of her Grey's Anatomy contract and that she was being killed off the show, Katherine Heigl said she wants to stay on the medical drama if her character, Izzie, survives brain surgery.

"I was assuming that [Izzie would die] at one point, and I got a lot of shrugged shoulders and shakes of the head, so I don't know if that's a yes or a no," she told the Associated Press Friday at a party celebrating the ABC show's 100th episode. "No one will tell me and I don't know how this is going to go."

She noted that the decision rests with the show and series creator Shonda Rhimes, who is known to value plot secrecy.
"I don't know if I live or die,"Heigl said. "I don't know how Izzie fares."
On the medical drama, Izzie has metastatic melanoma -- skin cancer -- and it has spread to her brain, giving her only a five percent chance of survival, which is a scoop Usmagazine.com first reported eight months ago. On Thursday's episode, she was seen surviving brain surgery.

Still, Heigl said, "I'm there" if Izzie remains part of Grey's Anatomy, for which she has starred since it debuted in 2005. She called the set "one of my favorite places to be" and said her colleagues are also friends.

Rhimes, who is also an executive producer for the show, declined to comment on what will happen to Heigl's character, but she did reveal a clue about the 100th episode, airing May 7.

HOUSTON -A judge has dismissed a charge against Grammy-nominated singer Wayna after she was arrested at a Houston airport for trying to bring a collapsible police baton through security.

Wayna was charged with possession of a prohibited weapon Wednesday. The third-degree felony was dropped Friday. Wayna, who attended the hearing with an attorney, uses the baton as a prop while performing.

Houston police said Thursday that security guards at Bush International Airport discovered the 24-inch baton in her carry-on bag.

Wayna released her second album, "Higher Ground," in 2008. One song on the album is "Billy Club," a ballad about police abuse. She twirls and points the baton when performing it live.

Wayna thanked prosecutors for not pursuing the incident further.

"The senior prosecutor recognized the case for what it was: an honest mistake that did not rise to the level of a criminal offense," Wayna said in a statement. "Based on the facts, that was undoubtedly the correct decision, and we are thankful for that decision."

Wayna said she forgot the baton was in the carry-on bag, along with CDs, makeup and "other materials she carries to performances."

"Obviously, the past 48 hours have been life-altering," she said. "I'm incredibly relieved and grateful that it's over and that justice prevailed."

Wayna's song "Lovin You" was nominated this year for a Grammy for best urban/alternative performance.

WASHINGTON -As a boy, Jerome White Jr. often spent weekends at his grandparents' house, where a melodramatic genre of Japanese music called enka would waft in the background.

White's Japanese grandmother, Takiko, had met his grandfather, an African-American serviceman, at a dance during World War II. And it was in their Pittsburgh living room that the 6-year-old and his grandma sang the postwar songs of love, loss and hardship. Even though he didn't understand the enka lyrics at the time, his Japanese singing pleased his grandmother, who died in 2005.

"I loved her very much," says White, now 27. "It just made me want to learn more songs and practice more."

Enka had an unwavering hook on White, and it has made him a superstar in Japan, where he's known as Jero. Named best new artist last year by Japan Record Awards — the Japanese version of the Grammys — White made his first major U.S. appearance Saturday during the opening ceremony of the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington before a diverse audience of several hundred. They cheered, waved and some even held up signs bearing his name.

Minoru Furuyama sat in the front row with his wife, their 18-year-old daughter and a friend. Furuyama says they came solely to see White's performance.

"He's got a beautiful voice," says the 55-year-old from Rockville, Md. "He's got the empathy or the soul for enka."

Furuyama grew up listening to enka and says the ballads of unrequited love and heartache are a "very universal kind of message."

White has helped reintroduce enka — long a favorite of older generations — to the Japanese, breathing new life into its melodies by incorporating touches of pop or rhythm and blues.

Most striking is his wardrobe. Traditional enka crooners perform in a suit or kimono, but White sings in masterful Japanese while dressed in baggy pants, a do-rag and a cocked-to-the-side baseball cap.

Seeing an African-American artist sing a "kind of perfect way of enka" in hip-hop fashion — "that's totally sort of an amazing contrast to us," says Hideo Fukushima, public affairs minister at the Embassy of Japan, which invited White to perform at the festival.

White said he hopes to make enka more appealing to younger audiences.

"This has been a big part of my life since I was a kid, and I'm fulfilling my dream," White says. "I'm just hoping everybody can at least feel something from it — even just have even a small ounce of interest in it."

Singing enka was a constant during White's childhood, though he says he never told his friends because they might have poked fun at him. He picked up some Japanese by listening to his grandmother and mother — who spent her first 13 years in Japan — speak the language. He later studied it in school.

White first visited Japan at age 15, to take part in a speech contest. At 20, he returned for three months as an exchange student while he studied information science at the University of Pittsburgh.

"At the time, I was into hip-hop and all about improving my Japanese and still singing enka," says the soft-spoken White. "I just thought, enka, Japanese, dance and my love for computers and information science; all of that can be found in Japan. I just thought, I just have to come back."

After graduation in 2003 he went back — to live.

While teaching English, White sang karaoke and took part in singing contests. He was discovered by Japan's Victor Entertainment.

White's career took off last year with his first release, "Umiyuki," or "Ocean Snow," which debuted at number four on the local pop charts — the highest debut ever by an enka artist. Last month, he released his first original album, "Yakusoku," or "Promise." Some of his performances are featured on the YouTube Web site.

For White, it's just the beginning.

"I have a lot of enka stars that I've always looked up to since I was a kid," White says. "I just want to be as successful as they are now."

LILONGWE, Malawi -Madonna appeared in court Monday in the capital of Malawi, where she was trying to adopt a 4-year-old girl as her second child from the southern African country.

The American pop star, dressed in a black skirt and black high heels, entered the courthouse in Lilongwe through a back door. She left about an hour later and it was not immediately known where she was headed.

The one adoption case on the court docket lists only the child's name — Chifundo James. The case was to be heard in a closed session before Judge Esme Chombo.

A welfare official and another person involved in the case say Madonna hopes to adopt a 4-year-old girl whose mother died soon after her birth. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case.

Madonna has not commented on the adoption and did not speak to reporters Monday morning.

She adopted her son David, 3, in Malawi last year. Children's advocacy groups have accused her of wielding her immense wealth and influence to circumvent Malawian law requiring an 18- to 24-month assessment period before adoption.

Madonna brought both David and her 12-year-old daughter, Lourdes, to Malawi this time, arriving Sunday. David then spent 2 1/2 hours with his biological father at an exclusive lodge where the pop star is staying.

"I was very happy to see him," Yohane Banda told The Associated Press, adding that David did not recognize him. "He asked me who I was."

David's mother died when he was a month old. His father has said he believed he could not care for him alone, and that placing him in an orphanage was the best way to ensure David's survival.

On Sunday, Madonna and Lourdes visited a Malawi village and Madonna spoke to residents and looked over drawings for a new school there.

Madonna first traveled to Malawi in 2006 while doing charity work and filming a documentary on the devastating poverty and AIDS crisis here. Her Raising Malawi organization, founded in 2006, raises funds to fight poverty by providing food, shelter, education and health care for children here.

Tanith Belbin competed as a pair skater and ice dancer in Canada before concentrating completely on ice dancing. Unable to find a good dance partner in Canada, Belbin moved to Detroit in 1998, where she was partnered with Benjamin Agosto by their coach Igor Shpilband. They had early success, winning the bronze at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships in their first competitive season. Belbin and Agosto qualified for the 2002 Olympics by placing second at U.S. championships, but were not able to go because Belbin was not an American citizen. They went on to win the bronze at Worlds.
For the 2007-2008 season, Belbin and Agosto began with first place finishes at both Skate America and Cup of China which qualified them for the Grand Prix Final, where they placed second. They won their 5th national title and then placed 4th at the 2008 Worlds after a fall by Belbin in the Compulsory Dance.

Belbin and Agosto were regular cast members of the Champions on Ice tour from 2004 until COI went out of business following the 2007 season. They were guest stars on part of the 2008 Stars on Ice tour.

Following the 2007-2008 season, Belbin and Agosto left Igor Shpilband, who had coached them for their entire partnership, and began working with the married coaching team of Natalia Linichuk and Gennadi Karponossov in Aston, Pennsylvania.

Belbin and Agosto began the 2008-2009 season at the 2008 Skate America and 2008 Cup of China, winning silver at both competitions. They withdrew from the 2008-2009 ISU Grand Prix Final after the original dance due to a back injury to Agosto. They withdrew from the 2009 U.S. Figure Skating Championships before the event began due to Agosto's injury.

Britney Spears was born in McComb, Mississippi, and raised in Kentwood, Louisiana as a Southern Baptist. Her parents are Lynne Irene (née Bridges), a former elementary school teacher, and Jamie Parnell Spears, a former building contractor and chef. Spears has two siblings, Bryan and Jamie Lynn.
